Fine Weather For the Weekend

MetService News Release
9th August 2018

MetService says this weekend is set to be a good one for those heading outdoors as a ridge of high pressure spreads across the country.

The front currently moving over the lower half of South Island today will deliver the last dose of the Severe Weather expected over the country until Monday.

This front weakens as it moves north over central New Zealand on Friday only bringing cloud and a few showers to the upper South Island and southwest corner of the North Island (including Wellington). Elsewhere clear skies will dominate, with temperatures reaching the mid-teens for those north of Kaikoura.

As a ridge of high pressure spreads across the country during Saturday plenty of fine weather will assist in drying out the soil on the western coasts which has been sodden by the procession of fronts during this week.

“The South Island ski fields are looking to see a cracker day on the slopes this Saturday while further north Sunday is currently looking to be the pick of the weekend with a bluebird day forecast,” April Clark MetService Meteorologist says.

“Though onshore winds will bring a few showers to those on the periphery of the high pressure (namely Northland, Gisborne and Fiordland) kiwis should take advantage of the fine weather as next week’s forecast is more unsettled,” Clark forewarns.
