Exploring Digital Earth and Technology

Registrations are now open for the 4th Digital Earth Summit, “Digital Earth and Technology” being held in Wellington New Zealand from 2 to 4 September 2012.

Wellington City Council and Land Information New Zealand have partnered to bring the 4th Digital Earth Summit to Wellington . The Summit will bring the best speakers from overseas and from New Zealand to exchange knowledge and explore technology advancement in this exciting area.

The Summit will focus on digital earth science and technology, including advanced earth observation systems, augmented reality and visualisation, high-performance computation and simulation, and spatial data infrastructures.

“Our Smart Capital is a great place to host this important summit, bringing together some of the world’s brightest minds in this field to Wellington ,” says Mayor Celia Wade-Brown.

“New developments in digital earth technology can help us understand and solve global spatial, social and environmental issues.”

“This event is an incredible opportunity for New Zealand ’s scientific and technology communities to showcase our country’s expertise and to engage with other great minds from around the world,” said Sue Gordon, General Manager from Land Information New Zealand.

The 2012 Digital Earth Summit was awarded to Wellington by the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE) at the completion of the 2011 Symposium in Perth .

The International Society for Digital Earth is a non-political, non-government, not-for-profit society for the promotion of academic exchange, science and technology innovation, education, and international collaboration on the Digital Earth vision. Digital Earth aims to harness the world’s data and information resources to develop a virtual 3-D model of the Earth in order to monitor, measure and forecast natural and human activity on the planet.

Prof. Carlo Ratti, Director of SENSEable City Laboratory at MIT has been confirmed as a keynote speaker at the Summit and the Committee will be announcing further speakers shortly.

The inaugural Digital Earth Summit was held in Auckland in 2006.
