Otago Symposium Attracts World-class Sport Specialists

All Blacks’ conditioning coach and physiotherapist to address Otago symposium

Key members of the Otago sporting community will gather to hear from experts who work closely with some of the world’s most elite athletes, when they attend a physical conditioning symposium at Otago Polytechnic’s Otago Institute of Sport and Adventure this Wednesday, 22 May.

The Applied High Performance Physical Conditioning Symposium: Movement Development has attracted several high profile speakers including All Blacks 15s Physiotherapist, Peter Gallagher, and All Blacks Sevens Physical Conditioning Coach, Mark Harvey.  The keynote speaker is Matiu Taingahue, a former strength and conditioning coach who has worked with professional football teams in Sweden and Norway. Mr. Taingahue, who is now training to become an Osteopath, will address attendees about the importance of athletic preparation and his view on movement development in high performance sport.

Otago Polytechnic Physical Conditioning Programme Manager Matthew Blair - who also works as a consultant for the International Rugby Board advising on the conditioning structures for referees, and Pacific Island sevens and 15s players - will be lending his expertise to the event as well. “It’s aimed at Otago sports professionals and students who are interested in the role physical conditioning plays in elite sports performance,” says Mr. Blair.

“There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion as well – it’s beneficial for sports professionals to consider differing advancements and approaches in the physical conditioning field and share their experiences. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to network with some of the most experienced professionals in sport science and medicine in New Zealand.”

The Symposium, organised by the Otago Institute of Sport and Adventure at Otago Polytechnic, will address movement development with physical conditioning, highlighting perceptual experience and neck exercise for front row forwards in rugby union.
Attendees include representatives from Canterbury Rugby Union, Lincoln University, Otago University School of Physical Education, the Otago University Rowing Club, and students and staff from the Otago Institute of Sport and Adventure, Otago Polytechnic.
Media are warmly invited to attend. Photo opportunities will commence at 5:00pm.
