Plenty to fight for at Daybreaker for Campbell

Plenty to fight for at Daybreaker for Campbell

Tauranga’s Phil Campbell has plenty to play for at this weekend’s Daybreaker rally in the Manawatu, which is the third round of both the Rally Xtreme challenge and Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship.

After stepping into a newer and faster R2 specification Ford Fiesta for the 2013 season, Campbell has had plenty of success in both series, leading the two-wheel drive Xtreme class and sitting a close second in the NZRC two-wheel drive standings as his speed continues to improve on every outing.

The Daybreaker event, whose stages are based around the service park in the country settlement of Apiti, is a new event to Campbell but is a challenge that he and co-driver Venita Fabbro are looking forward to with the roads having a good reputation amongst competitors.

Campbell will be looking to make his usual strong start with the first stage covering almost a quarter of the rally’s 116km of special stages. He sees this as a key in his battle with the identical Fiesta of Josh Marston for NZRC honours.

“I think it is really important to start fast with the layout of the event, which should work out well for us as we normally start fairly quickly,” says Campbell. “We’ve got two series to worry about this weekend and we are doing fairly well in both. But at the end of the day if we go well, the rest should take care of itself.”

The Daybreaker Rally gets underway from the small Manawatu town of Feilding at 8.30am on Saturday 29 June, with crews covering a total of 116km of special stages based around the service park in Apiti before the finish in Feilding just after 4pm.
