Cunningham aims for rookie points at Daybreaker

Clint Cunningham has his eyes on the prize for this weekend’s Daybreaker rally in the Manawatu, the third round of both the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship and Rally Xtreme series.

Cunnigham’s goal for the season is to take out the rookie championship, which he currently leads after two rounds, and the Aucklander is looking to add a victory in the class to go with his third place at round one and second place at the second round.

His main rivals for the honour will come from opening round victors Rhys Gardner and Graeme Featherstone, but an increase in speed at each event to date over the 2013 season sees Cunningham confident he can match his rivals in their more modern machinery.

With a long opening stage followed by a series of short sprints, West-Auckland based Cunningham is looking to draw on his traditional fast starts to gain an advantage over his rivals early on.

With regular co-driver Greg Ruka rejoining the team after missing the previous event in the Rally Xtreme series, Rally Hawkes Bay, Cunningham will be looking to overcome the disappointment of that event where a loose wire on the final stage took away a near certain class podium.

“It’s almost win it or bin it for the rookie title this weekend,” jokes Cunningham. “I’m really motivated to take the rookie title this year and a win here would really help that.

The Daybreaker Rally gets underway from the small Manawatu town of Feilding at 8.30am on Saturday 29 June, with crews covering a total of 116km of special stages based around the service park in Apiti before the finish in Feilding just after 4pm.
