SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - NORTH KOREA

1. LEAD STORIES: Top stories on Wednesday morning
included plans by Japanese police to question as early
as today the U.S. sailor whose credit card was found in
the car of a slain taxi driver in Yokosuka on March 19
concerning his possible involvement in the murder.

2. "No More Indulgence Toward North Korea" The
conservative Sankei's editorial said (4/2): "North
Korea has begun criticizing and blaming South Korea.
Pyongyang seems to have realized that it will no longer
be able to control South Korea as it had done prior to
the launch of a new government by President Lee Myung
Bak.... North Korea's tough position toward the South
indicates that despite its appeasement policy and
repeated support and aid for Pyongyang, Seoul has
failed to change the antagonistic nature of the
DPRK.... Recent incidents, including North Korea's
expulsion of South Korean officials from the Kaesong
Industrial Park and its test-firing of missiles,
demonstrate that indulging North Korea does not work.
The international community should deal with the DPRK
by imposing additional sanctions and readying itself to
stand up to Pyongyang's intimidation."
