REF: ANKARA 1793 and previous

1. (SBU) This is another in a series of weekly reports on PKK
violence in Turkey. Our primary source is the Turkish General Staff
(TGS) website, which documents contacts and clashes with the PKK, as
well as casualties incurred.

2. (U) During the October 16-23, 2008 reporting period, one security
official died in hospital on October 19. He was one of the
seriously injured security officials when terrorists opened fire on
a bus in Tunceli on October 14.
Another security official was injured when he stepped on a landmine
in Baskale, Van on October 23. The total number of security forces
casualties for the year through October 23, 2008, was 137 killed and
230 injured.

3. (U) During the same period, three PKK terrorists were killed in
the clashes. Two PKKers were captured and another six surrendered.
According to official TGS website figures, through the third week of
October, the number of PKK militants killed this year was 640, the
number of those captured was 143, and the number of those who
surrendered was 135.

4. (U) During the reporting period on October 20, the AKP Tunceli
Provincial Chairman, who was kidnapped on September 14, was
released. The total number of civilian casualties for the year
through the end of the third week of October, was 45 killed, and
