Link: Doomsday cult toll predicted to exceed 1,000
From Michael Dynes In Kanungu
WITH only mint leaves to ward off the lingering odour of decomposing flesh, mourners gathered at Uganda's doomsday cult compound in Kanungu yesterday for a service in memory of the 1,000 known victims of the biggest mass murder in modern history.
Amid the banana plantations and sugar cane fields where followers of the Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God lived, worked and perished in the church hall inferno that claimed 530 lives, Specioza Kazibwe, the Ugandan Vice-President, laid a wreath on the mass grave containing the victims' charred remains.
Announcing that the official total has reached 1,000, Mrs Kazibwe added: "I believe there will be more than that." She described the cult leaders as "diabolic, malevolent criminals masquerading as holy and religious people who outwitted the security network to exploit the ignorance of thousands".
