1) On patrol with Ireland’s special forces 06/06/00 (Herald Tribune) TIMOR - "The threat here is very real. You don't know when you are going to come face-to-face with the militia as you patrol through the jungle. You only have a split second to judge whether the person is armed and a threat."
2) West Timor Governor to visit Dili Thursday 06/06/00 (Lusa) DILI - The Indonesian governor of West Timor will pay a one-day visit to East Timor next Thursday, in another sign of improving relations between Dili and Jakarta, officials confirmed the visit on Monday. The visit by Governor Piet Talo was first announced last week in Jakarta by UNTAET chief Sergio Vieira de Mello.
3) Australian Army chief on lessons learned 06/06/00 (AAP) CANBERRA, June 2 - The East Timor mission proved a resounding success but it did not actually amount to a war, Army Commander General Frank Hickling said today.
4) East Timor elections will happen with or without pro-integration group 06/06/00 (Surya Timor) KUPANG – Responding to an UNTAS statement which said that it would not participate in the 2001 elections in E. Timor if the UN didn’t clarify UNAMET fraud in the referendum, UNTAET rep. in Kupang, Colin Stewart, stressed that the elections will still be carried out even without the pro-integration group.
5) Portuguese officer new commander of UN police force 06/06/00 (Lusa) DILI - The new head of the United Nations civilian police force in East Timor, Jose Luis da Costa e Sousa, arrived in Dili Monday to replace fellow Portuguese police superintendent Carlos Coelho Lima.
6) Military experience produces new wet weather gear 06/06/00 (AAP) CANBERRA - Australian soldiers deployed to East Timor have had plenty to complain about - the heat, the humidity, the mozzies, the food, the raincoats.

7) This week at UNTAET…. 06/06/00 (UNTAET) The first criminal hearing has been carried out in Oecussi. The hearing, of a man suspected of serious assault, was carried out on the UNTAET premises on 31 May. The suspect was released on 1 June pending trial. He has to report to CivPol weekly.
