1) Security stepped up, militia sighted in Dili 17/08/00 (AP) DILI - U.N. troops boosted security in the East Timor's capital on the eve of Indonesia's national day after pro-Jakarta militiamen infiltrated into the town, peacekeeping spokesman Col. Brynjar Nymo said Wednesday.

2) Indonesia says NTT Admin to register refugees 17/08/00 (ANTARA) Kupang - After its failure in the registration of East Timoreses refugees living in camps in West Timor, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has asked the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) provincial administration to do it a favour to conduct the registration.

5) New broad-based party gathering influential support 17/08/00 (Lusa) DILI - A group of prominent East Timorese leaders, spanning the Territory's historical political spectrum, are organizing a new center-right political party with the apparent blessing of independence leader Xanana Gusmao, a key organizer said Wednesday.

8) IOM/UNHCR: Aug 15 Briefings 17/08/00 (UNHCR) GENEVA - Following threats of protests and attacks last week, UNHCR has reduced its staff presence along the West Timor border. Only two remain in the UNHCR Atambua office of the 12 international staff members usually posted there.
