Project Independence – Women Survivors Of War

Project Independence – Women Survivors Of War

Media Advisory
8 April 2004

Project Independence – Women Survivors of War aims to raise more than $1.2 million over the next four years to assist women survivors of war in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Rwanda.

The project is being led by Soroptimist International and Women for Women International and will involve thousands of women worldwide.

The money raised will provide nearly 2000 women with the skills they need to rebuild their lives after war through direct aid and support, training in vocational and leadership skills and loans to start their own businesses and income-generating projects.

The International President of Soroptimist International Joan Cromer is visiting New Zealand this week to attend the Soroptimist International South West Pacific 14th Biennial Conference being held in Wellington over Easter.

Soroptimist International is a service organisation for women with 92,000 members in 124 different countries around the world. More than 250 women from the South Pacific region are expected to attend the conference being held at the Duxton Hotel.
