World Court To Rule On Israeli Wall In Two Weeks

The United Nations International Court of Justice (ICJ) today announced plans to rule in two weeks on a case concerning the legality of Israel's construction of a wall in the occupied Palestinian territory.

The Court was asked to render its advisory opinion on the matter by the General Assembly, which in late 2003 adopted a measure requesting the ICJ to examine "the legal consequences arising from the construction of the wall being built by Israel, the occupying Power, in the occupied Palestinian territory, including in and around East Jerusalem."

The Court was also asked to consider the rules and principles of international law, including the 1949 Fourth Geneva Convention as well as relevant Security Council and General Assembly resolutions.

During three days of public hearings in February, oral statements were made by Palestine, the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and over a dozen countries. In addition, the UN, 44 of its Member States, Palestine, the League of Arab States and the OIC have filed written statements with the Court.
