Annan Welcomes Coalition Agreement On New Cambodian
Government
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today welcomed the signing of a coalition agreement by Cambodia's two main political parties that paves the way for the formation of a new government.
The accord between the Cambodian People's Party and the United National Front for an Independent, Neutral, Peaceful and Cooperative Cambodia (FUNCINPEC) was signed today in the capital Phnom Penh nearly a year after elections were held.
"It is [Mr.
Annan's] sincere hope that the agreement will be quickly
formalized by the appropriate organs, so that a new
government will be established as soon as possible," a
statement issued by a UN spokesman said.
