TEAR Fund addressing floods in Bangladesh, India

TEAR Fund New Zealand is working to assist those affected by flooding in northern India.

Operating through partner agency EFICOR, TEAR Fund is providing relief to those in the Bihar region of India.

Bihar has been struck by the most severe flooding in 15 years. Monsoon floods have killed hundreds of people. Hundreds of thousands have been left homeless.

According to the Bihar Office of Relief, 20 million people have been affected with 500,000 families in need of immediate aid.

"As the flooding recedes, the greatest danger is now disease and a shortage of safe drinking water," says TEAR Fund projects manager Esther Ducai.

EFICOR is providing food materials, utensils, hygiene kits, water purification tablets, temporary shelter and medical assistance to 10,000 of the worst affected families.

EFICOR is also working for a long-term solution in India, by building flood resistant housing.
