UN Peacekeepers in Haiti

Question: How many peacekeepers has the UN authorized? How many are in the country? Are there any U.S. participants?

Answer: The Security Council established the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) under Resolution 1542 in April 2004. The authorized strength for the Mission is 6,700 military personnel and 1,622 civilian police. At present, there are approximately 4,800 UN troops and 1,270 UN civilian police on the ground. Three U.S. military personnel and one U.S. Coast Guard official are participating.

The United States continues to press for accelerated deployment of additional troops for the Mission, so that it can reach its authorized strength as quickly as possible.
