Afghanistan: Attack Targets Election Workers

UN Condemns Attack Against Convoy Of Election Workers In Afghanistan

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) today condemned an attack, two days ago, against a convoy transporting election materials in Kandahar province that resulted in the death of one person and the wounding of another.

“UNAMA condemns any violence that undermines the electoral process, and especially that which harms individuals working for or supporting the elections,” said a spokesman for the mission, Adrian Edwards. As the Afghan people had demonstrated their unambiguous support for democracy, anyone disrupting the elections is working against the interests of the Afghan people, he added.

He also conveyed UNAMA’s sincere condolences to the families of the victims.

With UNAMA facilitation, Afghans are currently making preparations for parliamentary, provincial and district elections, scheduled for 18 September.
