Iraqi Kurds Seek Greater UN Development Assistance

New York, Jul 7 2005

Iraqi Kurds are seeking further United Nations assistance in the development of the Kurdistan region of the country.

The Kurdistan Regional Government's Coordinator to the UN, Dindar Zebari, made the request in a meeting in Baghdad yesterday with Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Special Representative Ashraf Qazi, in which the two discussed how to increase UN operations in Northern Iraq.

"Mr. Qazi emphasized the importance of increased contact between their offices and ensured the Kurdistan Regional Coordinator of the full support of the United Nations," the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) said in a statement today.
