Maldives Condemns Cartoons

Maldives Condemns Cartoons

The Government of Maldives strongly condemns the publication of caricatures of the Holy Prophet of Islam in newspapers of Denmark, Norway and France. Material that reviles and insults religions and faiths have no place in civilised society. Such offensive publications are inflammatory and seek to incite hatred and discord among various communities.

The Government also condemns attempts to incite fear and hatred towards Muslims, and calls on those who have perpetrated these acts to extend an immediate apology to all Muslims and to desist from publishing such insulting material.

The Government supports calls for dialogue among civilizations. We believe that not only do such publications breach the limits to freedom of expression, but also impair attempts to build greater harmony and understanding among civilizations.

The Government of Maldives fully associates itself with the statement issued by the Secretary General of the OIC on 28 January 2006.
