Death threat prompts tight Samoa court security

Police in Samoa have tightened security at the Supreme Court building in Apia.

This comes after an election petition witness was given a death threat by one of the supporters for the first respondent, MP Paepaeuatele Kapeli Su’a.

Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia reports from Apia.

“Police said Chief Justice Patu Tiava’asu’e Falefatu Sapolu has asked the Police Commissioner to provide more security. The court after a mid-afternoon break was told by the council for the petitioner, Tuala Karanita Enari that one of the petitioner’s witnesses had informed him of the threat. The court proceedings were then adjourned for five minutes. It was then resumed after the bench had told the lawyer for the petitioner to lodge a formal complaint to the police. Investigations of the alleged threat is being carried out by police. Meanwhile, the hearing of the petition by the defeated candidate Tautoloitua Farani Posala against the MP for Aleipata Itupa I lalo constituency is continuing.”
