French Polynesia rally interrupts assembly sitting

French Polynesia rally interrupts assembly sitting

An estimated 2,000 people in French Polynesia have taken part in a march which two unions billed a general strike against the high cost of living.

The crowd went to the territorial assembly and prompted the speaker, Philip Schyle to interrupt the sitting, to address the group which was led by two key unions.

They had decided to go ahead with their action despite President Oscar Temaru having agreed on the eve of the march that he would withdraw the bill on union representation which prompted the strike call last week.

The unions say if within two months there is no policy to lower prices they will set up blockades.

Mr Schyle’s party says the ruling Union For Democracy lacked sensitivity in pushing the bill and added that the unions attracted political agitators whose motivation have nothing to do with the interests of wage earners.
