Vanuatu risks losing eight doctors

Vanuatu risks losing eight qualified young doctors for work abroad if the Public Service Commission fails to honour an application by Port Vila Central Hospital to provide them with permanent appointments.

The Daily Post reports that the doctors have been on temporary contracts, which run out at the end of June.

They have threatened to look for jobs abroad if the Commission does not make them permanent public servants immediately.

The plight of the doctors has reached a critical stage and the superintendent of the hospital, Doctor Willie Tokon, was reported to have met the secretary of the public service commission to seek the approval for their appointments.

At least one ni-Vanuatu doctor is now working overseas after he returned home to find the government was not ready to recognise his qualifications.
