Annan transmits report on Hariri murder probe to Security Council

Secretary-General Kofi Annan has sent members of the United Nations Security Council the latest report on the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, a spokesman for the world body confirmed today.

Mr. Annan received the report from Serge Brammertz, the Commissioner of the International Independent Investigation Commission (IIIC) dealing with the bombing, which in addition to killing the premier also took the lives of 22 others.

The Security Council has scheduled an open meeting and consultations to discuss the report with Mr. Brammertz on Wednesday, 14 June, the spokesman said.

The IIIC has already reported finding evidence pointing to both Lebanese and Syrian involvement in the bomb attack. Since its last report was submitted in March, Mr. Brammertz has held a number of high-level meetings, including with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Security Council set up UNIIIC after an earlier UN mission found Lebanon's own investigation seriously flawed and Syria primarily responsible for the political tension preceding Mr. Hariri's murder.
