Death Sentences For Health Professionals In Libya

20 December 2006

Death sentence for Bulgarian Nurses and Palestinian Doctor in Libya

Public Services International condemned the decision of the Libyan Supreme Court to sentence 5 Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor to death for the supposed crime of infecting patients at a children's hospital in Benghazi with the HIV/AIDS virus.

"There is no medical evidence to support the Court ruling. International experts have clearly demonstrated that the history of the virus at the hospital pre-dates the arrival of the Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian doctor.

We must therefore suppose that this decision is politically motivated. We deeply abhor this ruling and appeal to the Supreme Court and the Libyan government to revoke the death sentences," said Hans Engelberts, General Secretary of Public Services International.
