Solar Expert Thanks Gov’t, Recommends Solar Power

Local Solar Power expert and Director of Willies Electric, David Iro praises the present government for working in partnership with rural people in the country to promote solar energy in rural areas.

Mr Iro who was part of a government delegation visiting Santa Cruz last week said the sun is one of the best sources of energy for the present government’s rural electrification policy, especially in far remote islands like Temotu.

Mr Iro recommended more government support to promote and utilize sun energy through solar power in rural areas.

He has worked closely with leaders in Santa Cruz to establish the Sunrise Solar and Electricity Skills Training Center, which was opened in February last year.

He said Temotu is the first province in Solomon Islands that received the first sunlight every day of each year ahead of every other province.

“Electricity is one of the major catalysts in development today and electricity from the sun is future for a country like Solomon Islands.

Mr Iro said sun is everywhere and the only delay to supply power for the next day is the 12-hour sleep at night where both the sun and man went to sleep.

He said solar power is cheaper and suits the rural areas that usually incurred expensive transportation costs in shipping fuel, equipment and power lines.

High shipping costs and infrequent schedules to Temotu is one of hurting problems that hit hard on both economic and social development over the years.

“12 hours of waiting is the only delay for the sun to rise again before the next source of electricity supply arrives,” Mr Iro said.

He believed in the current government’s vision in collaboration with SITAFE to promote rural electricity throughout the country.

“A dream at night not be remembered.

“But the vision and mission of SITAFE with support of the Solomon Islands government will keep these practices in place,” Mr Iro said.
