No Timetable for Iraq Withdrawal

The Prime Minister has said it would be "wrong" to set a timetable for withdrawing troops from Iraq.

Speaking to MPs during his first Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Brown said that the UK would not break its obligations to the United Nations or to the Iraqi government.

Reductions in troop numbers were being made where appropriate, but it was important to wait until the situation in locations such as Basra became stable enough for Iraqi forces to deal with, he added.

The PM also praised the work of British forces in Afghanistan, the "front-line" against the Taliban. Withdrawing from Afghanistan would allow the Taliban to return to power and undo the work of recent years, he said.
