President Chen's Remarks at the Opening Ceremony of the 32nd World Congress of Master Tailors

Good Morning to you all!

I am very pleased to have been invited to attend the opening ceremony of the 32nd World Congress of Master Tailors at the Taipei International Convention Center.

This congress is very important in the sense that it will bring together more than 300 outstanding tailors from 16 countries to share their tailoring experiences and skills, thereby driving the future development of the tailoring industry.

I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations and welcome to all our distinguished guests, many of whom have traveled from so far to be here today.

Since Taiwan joined the World Federation of Master Tailors in 2003, Taiwan's tailors, through their solidarity and world-class craftsmenship, and guided by a determination to reach out to the world through people's diplomacy, have won many prominent awards in international competitions.

Such oustanding performances fully demonstrate their aspirations for, and commitment to, the tailoring industry. At the Golden Needle and Golden Thread International Competition at the 31st World Congress of Master Tailors in Berlin in 2005, the winner of the women's clothing category and runner-up in the men's clothing category were both from Taiwan.

What's more, through the united efforts of the Taiwan delegation, Taiwan External Trade Development Council, and Taipei Representative Office in Germany, Taiwan won the bid, after vigorous competition with many countries, to host the 32nd Congress of Master Tailors.

To be able to host this congress is the highest honor for any country's tailoring community. Taiwan's tailoring community, under the leadership of President Ho of the Association of Taiwan Master Tailors, has worked hard to organize this congress. Indeed, hosting this conference is a testament to the expertise of Taiwan's tailors, , whose work is already on par with North America and Europe.

It also reflects the growing popularity in Taiwan for tailor-made clothing. Moreover, this congress shows us how Taiwan's master tailors have, with the needles and threads in their hands, created new diplomatic channels for Taiwan in the international arena.

No matter how fashion trends shift, the superior fit, elegant taste, and wonderful needlework of tailor-made clothes will always be a hallmark of excellence. Each custom-made suit is the creation of a group of dedicated tailors.

It is my earnest hope that all master tailors, with their spirit of learning and sharing, will continue to allow the suit-making industry to prosper and usher in a golden age for tailor-made attire. I would like to welcome our distinguished guests to this congress once again.

I hope this congress will be an educational one, where people may exchange experiences with one another. I also hope that you may experience the optimism and hospitality of Taiwan people, visit our scenic spots, enjoy Taiwan's famous cuisine, and, after returning to your respective countries, share your wonderful time in Taiwan with friends.

In closing, I would like to wish the congress every success and each of you health and lasting prosperity. Thank you.
