Strong Winds Bring Lake-Effect Snow Today in Upstate NY and Ontario

The potent nor'easter that slammed the Northeast on Sunday and will move out into Atlantic Canada today. In its wake, the strong winds that Sunday night sparked an outbreak of lake-effect snow across the Great Lakes will begin to wind down today.

The storm dumped heavy snow on portions of the Northeast on Sunday. Boston broke the daily record snowfall with 7.6 inches falling on Sunday, bringing the storm total to 8.8 inches. Other snowfall totals over the 24-hour period ending today at 2 a.m. EST include:

* Chicago, Ill. - 10.1 inches
* Detroit, Mich. - 9 inches
* Buffalo, N.Y. - 9 inches
* Central Park, N.Y. - 1 inch

The blustery winds today will cross the open water of the Great Lakes, continuing the lake-effect snow showers and snow squalls in the usual Snow Belt regions downwind of the Lakes. Areas of upstate New York to the lee of Lake Ontario could receive more than 6 inches of lake-effect snow on top of the snow from the nor'easter.

Other areas around the Great Lakes and along the spine of the Appalachians in West Virginia could get an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow today. According to Expert Senior Meteorologist Bernie Rayno, the winds and the lake-effect snow will begin to diminish by this afternoon.
