Iraqi NGOs Receive Funding For Electoral Education

Iraqi NGOs receive funding boost from UN to launch electoral education campaign

16 March 2008 - The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS)announced today the 75 projects by Iraqi non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to kick off an electoral education campaign.

For the Electoral Education Campaign Project, which is funded through the UN Development Group Iraq Trust Fund, the over 250 proposals were received were evaluated by a panel comprising representatives from UNOPS and the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) last month. Each submission was assessed for quality and the applicant organization's track record.

The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), which observed all of the selection stages, found the process to be fair and independent.

The number of NGO projects receiving funding in each governorate is based on estimates of voter population figures, with priority being given to providing sufficient resources to the campaign in the governorates Anbar, Diyala and Salah-el-Deen.

Women, youth, minorities, the displaced and those with special needs will be targeted in particular by the new initiative.
