Greece: UK Foreign Office Advice To Brit Tourists

Greece: Advice To British Tourists (07/08/2008)

Following news that officials on the Greek islands of Zakynthos and Crete are seeking to curb inappropriate behaviour by British tourists our Ambassador to Greece, Simon Gass, has visited Zakynthos to meet the Mayor and has been speaking to the media.

Simon Gass spoke to the BBC Today Programme and said:

'If you have a resort in which there are very large numbers of bars selling very, very cheap and often low quality alcohol in very large quantities you can't be that surprised when you get an awful lot of people who end up drunk'.

Every year our Consular department runs campaigns to try and help people have a safer, happier holiday, and reduce the large number of consular cases it deals with. As part of our Know Before You Go campaign we are currently running a number of major initiative across the Greek Islands including:

* Know your limits - a rape awareness campaign distributing over 20,000 postcards in bars and beaches

* Anti drug spikies - distributing over 20,000 plastic covers for drinks to prevent them being spiked

* 60,000 beer-mats distributed in bars

* 8,000 posters in pub/club toilets

The estimated coverage across the resorts by FCO materials is close to 75%.

On the 12th August our Consular team will be publishing our annual British behaviour abroad - a report which highlights the highs and lows of our consular assistance across the world.
