Rural Malaitans Welcome Taiwan’s Support To Livelihood Projects

People in West Fataleka in Malaita Province have welcomed with open arms an announcement by a senior Taiwanese Official of Taiwan’s commitment to improve livelihood in Solomon Islands rural areas.

Political Counselor at the Embassy of Taiwan in Honiara, Ben Wang made the announcement at Sisifiu village on Friday when he jointly launched a Community Fishing Project with MP for Fataleka constituency, Steve Abana.

Mr Wang said even though the world is suffering the present financial crisis, Taiwan is not shifting its commitment to Solomon Islands.

“No matter what difficulties Solomon Islands encounters, Taiwan will always extend helping hands in due time because Taiwan is a good friend, reliable partner and strong ally of Solomon Islands,”

The SBD$35,000 Fishing project is implemented with funds provided by Taiwan under the Rural Constituency Development Fund (RCDF), which is managed by individual Members of Parliament to develop their constituencies.

Mr Wang said he is pleased to witness how Taiwan’s taxpayers’ money is used to help friends who need a helping hand.

“I notice that by means of projects to develop constituencies, people can enjoy a peaceful and harmonious life and society will naturally become more stable and secure,” he said.

The project is expected to directly benefit thousands of people across the region.

Sisifiu Community leader, Rodney Sam said his people have been neglected for many years and the fishing project is one of the major developments in the area.

“Our cries for many years have now been answered. This project will certainly transform our lives in years to come,” Mr Sam said.
