Flight 1549 Passengers Braved the
Elements
State College, Pa. -- January 15, 2009 --
AccuWeather.com reports the weather prior to
the US Airways emergency landing in the Hudson River was
mostly sunny with winds out of the northwest at 15 mph. The
temperature at the time of Flight 1549 departure was 21
degrees F. Snow had fallen earlier in the day and, at
LaGuardia Airport, about an inch of snow had accumulated by
noon.
The water temperature at Battery Park, along the Hudson River at the time of the crash was 41°.
All crew and passengers were rescued late Thursday afternoon from the relatively tranquil, yet frigid waters.
The scenario could have been different if the departing clipper storm was stronger. A more intense storm would have created much stronger winds and turbulent waters in the vicinity of the crash.
Conditions in the New York area are forecast to remain generally clear this evening, aside from a couple of passing flurries. Temperatures will plummet through the teens and into the single digits tonight. RealFeel® temperatures will fall below zero by dawn. Brisk winds from the northwest will continue to average 10 to 20 mph.
The coldest day of the season so far is in store Friday in the New York area. Despite a good deal of sunshine, temperatures will do no better than the teens in the afternoon with winds from the west and northwest at 15-25 mph.
