Focus firmly on helping Haiti despite quake in Chile
While TEAR Fund NZ has empathy for the victims of Chile’s earthquake, it has no plans to launch an appeal.
TEAR Fund executive director Stephen Tollestrup said, “While our sympathies and prayers are with the victims of the Chilean quake, unlike Haiti where we are heavily committed, we believe the government there has a much greater capacity to deal with the disaster.”
Mr Tollestrup said, “Chile is a far more developed country than Haiti with earthquake-proof buildings and a similar GDP to that of New Zealand. TEAR Fund is committed to meeting the needs of the world’s poorest and in Haiti the need is still huge,” he said.
