Federal Character Principle Critical For Nigeria, Says Utuama

DELTA State Deputy Governor, Professor Amos Utuama (SAN) says the correct application of the federal character principle is very critical to engendering the spirit of patriotism and nationalism in Nigeria.

Utuama, a professor of law, receiving the Commissioner representing Delta State at the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Ambassador Isaac Sagay in his office on Thursday, observed that the non adherence to the said principle was inimical to patriotism among Nigerians.

“The Federal Character Commission is one of the important institutions put in place to ensure that every Nigerian counts in the distribution and allocation of opportunities and resources in this country.

“That is the only way one can instill the spirit of patriotism in people because if we say are Nigerians and we are counted out of opportunities available then we will be less patriotic,” he said.

AkanimoReports said the deputy governor urged Sagay to “ ensure that every Deltan counts in allocation and distribution of opportunities and resources at the national level.

“We will do everything to ensure that we assist you in carrying out your functions in a more satisfactory way to the benefits of all Deltans and to enrich the three-point agenda of His Excellency, the governor of Delta State, which is peace and security, human capital development and infrastructural development.”

Utuama noted that Delta State was an “epitome of equality and equity in the distribution of opportunities and resources,” attributing cases of non compliance to the demands of FCC by certain parastatals in the state to communication gap.

Sagay had informed that the commission had ensured that the state gets its fair share at the national level, observing however that there were certain imbalances in terms of federal presence in the state compared to other states.

He also called attention to the non compliance of the tenets of the FCC by certain parastatals in the state and also urged the state government to assist the state office of the commission with necessary logistics and accommodation that would help it to function effectively.
