ChildFund Emergency Appeal for Japan

ChildFund Emergency Appeal for Japan

ChildFund New Zealand is asking New Zealanders to contribute to an emergency appeal to support the relief efforts in Japan after the devastating earthquake and tsunami this week.

On March 11, 2011 a 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan. The death toll from the earthquake and subsequent tsunami stands at just under 2,000 with more than 10,000 people still missing.

ChildFund New Zealand chief executive Paul Brown says that ChildFund Japan’s National Director Takeshi Kobayashi has contacted him to ask for help for vulnerable children affected by the disaster.

“Despite difficulties with communication and transport in the disaster zone, ChildFund Japan is assessing the needs of children’s homes in the affected areas. As we know children suffer first and worst in any disaster and these children are especially vulnerable,” says Mr Brown.

“As well as basic supplies in disasters, children need help coping with what they have been through. ChildFund has a long history of helping children in emergencies to adjust and feel safe again.”

Donations to ChildFund’s Japan Emergency Appeal can be made by calling 0800 223 111 or online www.childfund.org.nz.
