Solomon Islands Marks International Archives Day

June 9, 2011 - The Solomon Islands Government today marks the International Archives Day in Honiara on the theme “Archive for Memory and Evidence”.

Staff of the National Archives of Solomon Islands (NASI) has organized a number of activities including speeches, exhibits of historical materials and public viewing of the country’s repository and conservation center at the National Archives building.

During the one-day event, visitors including primary school students were given the opportunity to view the country’s history and at the same time interact with local archivists to learn about the important roles and functions of the National Archives.

The National Archives was set up in 1979 as an Independence gift from the governments of Britain and Australia. It is a current member of the International Council of Archives as well as the pacific branch PABRICA.

The 9th of June each year is celebrated as the International Archives Day after the International Council on Archives was created under the auspices of UNESCO and was adopted by the Archives Community world-wide.

“Archives are extremely important because they preserve our nation’s experiences, spirit, inspirations and visions for our future generations,” said Ms Julian Choningolo, Director of the National Archives.

She added that our archival heritage is a valuable testimony about the economical, political and social development of our nation which requires a comprehensive approach among stakeholders to ensure preservation of documents.
