G-8 Global Partnership Meetings

Taken Question
Office of the Spokesperson
Washington, DC

Question Taken at the January 26, 2012 Daily Press Briefing

January 27, 2012

________________________________________

Question: Can you provide any details or readout of Ambassador Jenkins’ meetings with her counterparts on the G-8 Global Partnership?

Answer: From January 24-26, representatives from more than 20 members of the Global Partnership (GP) and, for the first time, ten international organizations participated in the first meeting of the Global Partnership for 2012 under U.S. leadership. The group reflected on the outcomes of the Deauville Summit, and on areas of future collaborative efforts in the four focus areas agreed to in Deauville: nuclear and radiological security; biosecurity; scientist engagement; and facilitating the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1540. The group also discussed efforts to increase the membership of the partnership and ways in which the GP can become a more effective coordinating mechanism for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threat reduction activities among its members and relevant international organizations. The meeting reflected a new direction of the GP to be more global in scope and responsive to new security challenges. GP members also agreed that Kazakhstan would join the Partnership, making it the 24th member of the group.
