Secretary-General To Visit Four Asian Nations

Secretary-General Ban
Ki-moon will depart this Sunday for a trip that will take
him to Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Republic of
Korea, his spokesperson announced today.
The trip begins in Indonesia, where Mr. Ban will meet with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa and Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih.
While in the capital, he will deliver a keynote speech, entitled “The United Nations and Global Security: Collaboration and Partnership,” at the opening ceremony of the Jakarta International Defense Conference.
He will also give a lecture on the theme “United Nations peacekeeping: Challenges and Opportunities for Indonesia, the Region and Beyond” at the Indonesia Peace and Security Centre.
In Malaysia, Mr. Ban will meet with Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak and Foreign Minister Dato’ Sri Anifah Aman, as well as visit the Malaysian Peacekeeping Training Center.
He will also attend an event to commemorate World Tuberculosis Day, which is observed annually on 24 March, and give a public lecture at the Institute for Diplomacy and Foreign Relations on “Malaysia and the United Nations in a Changing World.”
Mr. Ban will then travel to Singapore, where he will hold talks with President Tony Tan Keng Yam, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Foreign Minister K. Shanmugam. He will also deliver the Inaugural Fullerton Lecture of the International Institute for Strategic Studies on “Securing our Future: Singapore, the Region and Beyond.”
A visit to Singapore’s major water management facility, which is part of the country’s sustainable urbanization efforts, is also planned.
Mr. Ban caps off his Asia tour with a stop
in his native Republic of Korea, where he will take part in
the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit and hold a number of
bilateral meetings on the margins of the event.
