Who to Believe

Editor,

Kumar Gunaratnam an Australian claims he was abducted last Friday at gunpoint by the secret police in Colombo and was assaulted and tortured and left to fear for his life. His treatment at the hands of the Sri Lankan State authorities is related to his work in Sri Lanka as a radical left wing political activist.

But the Sri Lanka Ambassador in Canberra claims Gunaratnam was never abducted, arrested or tortured by Sri Lanka state police. The whole thing is a fabrication.

Now who should we believe?

I know the Ambassador is a high ranking state official of a foreign country and an honourable man and all that but for some reason I am inclined to believe the Australian man Gunaratnam's version of what happened in Colombo on Friday 7 April.

Yours sincerely,

Rajend Naidu
Sydney
