Ban Congratulates France’s New President-Elect

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
congratulates François Hollande for his victory in the
second round of the French presidential elections, which
took place on Sunday, according to Mr. Ban’s spokesperson.
“The Secretary-General wishes Mr. Hollande every success and looks forward to working together with him on a variety of issues of interest to France and the United Nations,” Mr. Ban’s spokesperson said in a statement today, adding that the Secretary-General will address a letter to the President-elect shortly, congratulating him on his victory and wishing him success in the implementation of his mandate.
According to media reports, Mr. Hollande won 51.7 per cent of the total votes in the second round of elections, defeating the current French President, Nicolas Sarkozy.
“The Secretary-General has greatly appreciated the excellent cooperation he has enjoyed these past five years with President Sarkozy,” the statement said.
Mr.
Hollande will reportedly be sworn in on 15 May.
