Kiwi team off to Gaza with Malaysian & European partners

Today a four-person team from New Zealand flies out to Cairo to join an international aid convoy to Gaza.

In a first for New Zealand, the Kia Ora Gaza convoyers have received official authorisation from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry to enter Gaza, which is blockaded by Israel with the help of Egypt.

The convoy will depart Cairo this weekend for the drive through Egypt’s Rafah land crossing into Gaza.

“Kia Ora Gaza is joining Viva Palestina Malaysia and the European-based Miles of Smiles convoy in a combined humanitarian mission to besieged Gaza,” said Roger Fowler, leader of the Kiwi team.

“Gaza's healthcare system is lacking many essentials due to the Israeli siege, so our team is taking medical supplies urgently requested by Gaza health authorities,” said Mr Fowler, who heads an educational trust in South Auckland.

"We are also bringing a message of hope from outside to the 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza who are suffocating in what has been labelled the world’s biggest prison."

The other three Kiwis taking part are Tali Williams, a union organiser from Wellington, and Gibran Janif and Hone Fowler, both community workers in Auckland.
