Secretary-General Voices Sadness at Passing of Saudi Crown Prince

New York, Jun 16 2012 5:10PM

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon voiced his sadness at the passing today of Crown Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, who was also Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior of Saudi Arabia.

"Crown Prince Nayef devoted his life to promoting the security of Saudi Arabia," said a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, who conveyed his condolences to King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Saud and to the people of Saudi Arabia.

Mr. Ban also noted that the Crown Prince made a major contribution to the recent establishment of the UN Centre for Counter-Terrorism, which is based in Saudi Arabia.

The Centre was created in September 2010, with the support of the Government of Saudi Arabia, and seeks to support the implementation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, which was adopted by the General Assembly in 2006.
