Anti-Amaechi Protest: Group Braces For Occupy Port Harcourt

Anti-Amaechi Protest: Group Braces For Occupy Port Harcourt

APPARENTLY irked by a seeming nervour reaction of the Rivers State Government to the 10,000 man protest march against Governor Chibuike Amaechi, in Port Harcourt, the state capital, on Wednesday, arrowheads of the Rivers Peoples Assembly, organisers of the march, have promised to step up the protest to Occupy Port Harcourt.

Government brushed aside the protest aimed at ousting Amaechi as a rally of miscreants. Repeatedly, Port Harcourt has accused Abuja of fueling unrest in the state with an intent of making the state ungovernable.

But, media handlers at the Presidency have been battling to clear President Goodluck Jonathan's name from the worrisome political storm in Rivers.

Spokesperson for the organisers of the Port Harcourt protest march, David Soberekon, told AkanimoReports on Thursday that the popular peoples of the state feel insulted for being labelled as miscreants by agents of government.

''Do they mean to tell us that the market women who took part in the protest march are miscreants? Whatever the case, there is no going back on our Amaechi Must-Go campaign.

''As i speak with you, we will soon embark on Occupy Port Harcourt till we get answers to the questions we are raising. Our questions which they don't want to address are: What happened to the two aircrafts the Peter Odili Administration left behind in 2007?

''How did government spend the N1.6 trillion that flowed into the state since the inception of the Amaechi Administration? Why was the registration of the state jet bungled by government?''

Former Niger Delta freedom fighter, Ateke Tom, is currently leading the Rivers Peoples Assembly. On the unfolding crisis in the state, he said, ''i am on the side of Rivers people. We are crusading for explanations to issues that are not very clear to us the ordinary people''.

In the mean time, the leader of the group has clarified that the ongoing protest in the state has nothing to do with ex-militants, pointing out that ex-militants in the state are less than 6,000.

''The Rivers Peoples Assembly is a body of Rivers people who are very concerned about affairs in their state. In our fold are market women, activists, and unemployed youths who are pressing for tangible explanations to what has been happening in the state'', Ateke said.

Ateke was a major ally of the Odili administration when Amaechi was the Speaker. For siding with the people this time around tends to show that there is more to unfold in the political drama in Rivers.
