Bangkok: UN Urges Dialogue to Resolve Political Differences

Concerned By Rising Tensions in Bangkok, UN Chief Urges Dialogue to Resolve Political Differences

New York, Nov 27 2013 - Concerned by rising political tensions in Bangkok, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called today on all sides to refrain from violence, respect the rule of law and “to resolve their differences through genuine dialogue and peaceful means.”

“The Secretary-General has followed closely the events in Thailand over the last few weeks and is concerned by the rising political tensions in Bangkok,” said a statement issued this evening by the UN chief’s spokesman in New York.

According to the statement, Mr. Ban called on all sides to exercise the utmost restraint, refrain from the use of violence and to show full respect for the rule of law and human rights.

“He notes in this regard the Government’s welcome assurances that it will continue to respect the rights of people to hold peaceful demonstrations,” the statement said, adding that the Secretary-General is nevertheless concerned by reports of Government institutions being occupied by the protesters.

“The Secretary-General strongly encourages all concerned to resolve their differences through genuine dialogue and peaceful means,” the statement concludes.

Media reports have cited escalating tensions in and around the Thai capital, Bangkok, as political demonstrations have gained momentum in the past few weeks, with protestors reportedly marching on Government offices.
