JICA Donates Water Purifcation Systems And Sleeping Pads

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has provided emergency relief items in response to last week’s flash floods.

Among the donations were 20 sets of portable water purification systems and sleeping pads for victims who have lost all properties during the floods.

Director of the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) Loti Yates said these materials would be fundamental in preventing disease outbreaks within the evacuation centres.

“JICA is also the first donor to contribute sleeping pads to our relief effort, for which we are very grateful because so many of those who were affected have been left with nothing to sleep on.”

Besides the water purification systems and 96 sleeping pads, JICA provided 3,500 blankets; and 1,150 water containers. These will be delivered on Monday and will be distributed among flood victims.

JICA has also provided an engineer to help rehabilitate the Ranadi dump site, which is currently water-logged causing health and environmental risks.

The engineer has assured people within 800km radius of Honiara that they will be kept informed of the situation through a short-wave radio transmitter JICA has provided to the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation (SIBC) last year.

The equipment was donated as part of a project to assist disaster communications by improving SIBC’s radio broadcasting network during times of disaster.

Meanwhile, Mr Yates thanked JICA for the tremendous and continues support given to the relief and recovery efforts.
