CDS Requests to Re-Designate Syria for Protected Status

CDS Requests Department of Homeland Security Re-Designate Syria for Temporary Protected Status

Washington, D.C. ¬– The Coalition for a Democratic Syria (CDS) filed a request last week with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) urging that body to re-designate Syria for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). In accordance with 8 U.S.C. § 1254a, the Secretary of Homeland Security may designate a foreign country for TPS due to conditions in the country that temporarily prevent the country's nationals from returning safely, such as the ongoing conflict in Syria and the unprecedented political persecutions carried out by the Assad regime.

As a coalition of Syrian-American groups, CDS represents the families and friends of refugees, those suffering under extremism from the Islamic State, and those under daily shelling from the Assad regime. These myriad threats present an untenable reality for Syrians living in the United States, and last year’s designation of TPS in June of 2013 must be renewed.

“We are incredibly grateful to the United States Department of Homeland Security for protecting Syrians living in United States from having to return to face the duel threats of IS and the Assad regime through TPS,” said CDS Government Relations Chair Muna Jondy, “This is why we are requesting another designation, to protect our countrymen from extremism and tyranny.”
