Brendon McCullum’s ‘Key to the Capital’ to be awarded at next Basin Reserve test match

Brendon McCullum’s historic achievement to be the first New Zealander to reach 300 in a test innings will be recognised by the awarding of the ‘Keys to the City’ of Wellington.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown will present the Black Caps Captain with the unique key in a short ceremony during the tea break on the first day of the Sri Lanka cricket test match, 3 January at the Basin Reserve.

Mayor Wade-Brown said the award was a fitting recognition of Brendon McCullum’s achievement to be the first New Zealander to reach the triple century, which also ensured a Test Series victory for the Black Caps, at New Zealand’s spiritual home of cricket.

“The Basin Reserve is a treasure for Wellington City, and is regarded worldwide as a special Test Cricket venue,” she said.

“Cricket fans from the Capital, around New Zealand and the world have witnessed many triumphs and dramatic moments, and Brendon’s magnificent innings ranks among the best of them.”

Cricket Wellington CEO Peter Clinton said that recognition for Brendon’s innings and the association with the Basin had come from all over the world. “I’ve received many comments from people celebrating that history was once again created at the Basin Reserve. We’re all looking forward to the Council recognising Brendon’s achievement in such a unique way.”

Brendon McCullum achieved the milestone during an innings of 302 versus India at the Basin Reserve 14-18 February 2014, bringing up the triple century in the morning session of the final day. The innings took 775 minutes and 559 balls, and helped secure a draw at the Basin leading to a 1-0 test series victory against the Indian cricket team.

The Keys to the City would ensure that Brendon will always be "at home" in the city of his greatest sporting performance, said Deputy Mayor Justin Lester.

“Like so many other Wellingtonians in our city of cricket fanatics, I was enthralled by Brendon’s historic achievement. Wellington will host some magnificent games in the Cricket World Cup 2015 and the awarding of the ‘key’ to our Captain will be a great start to the year.”

Previous recipients of the Keys to the City were Sir Peter Jackson and Sir Richard Taylor, for their unique contributions to the city.

The ceremonial key was especially produced by local manufacturers Te Mahi Limited, incorporating innovative 3d printing and CNC technology, cast bronze and recycled New Zealand kauri.
