All Hands Volunteers Deploys to Nepal After Earthquake
All Hands Volunteers Deploys to Nepal After Earthquake Devastates Country
On April 25th a 7.8 earthquake
hit Nepal near the capital city of Kathmandu, and reports
confirm thousands of fatalities and mass destruction
throughout the country. Over 3,000 people were killed by the
earthquake, and as rescue teams search the rubble for
survivors the death toll is expected to
rise.
Strong aftershocks are still shaking the
country, the largest measuring at a 6.7 magnitude. Due to
the destruction of infrastructure and homes during the
initial earthquake, tens of thousands are now homeless and
living outdoors, where they are especially vulnerable to
these aftershocks.
Gathering news from remote
villages has been a challenge since many of the roads and
trails are blocked by rubble. The few stories from these
surrounding areas that have emerged echo what is being heard
around the country: the damage is vast, and help is
desperately needed.
Upon receiving news of this
disaster, All Hands immediately began to monitor the
situation. Our first Disaster Assessment Response Team
member will arrive in Nepal on Tuesday, April 28, to assess
the aftermath of the earthquake from the ground and
coordinate with other aid agencies. Once Search and Rescue
deems it safe, more DART members will arrive in-country to
assist in the response.
All Hands Volunteers is a
US-based, non-profit organization that addresses the
immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by
natural disasters.
