Unexpected yachtie haven found on the world’s smallest island nation

Forty-eight crew members from 16 yachts participating in the World ARC Round the World Rally gratefully disembarked for 72 hours on the world’s smallest island nation of Niue last month following rough seas on their passage from French Polynesia.

Not only did Niue provide a welcome haven for the World ARC crews, but a true experience in Niuean culture and adventure activities.

“World ARC fleet 2015-16 really enjoyed the warm welcome of the Niuean people and discovering this hidden oasis. World ARC participants had the opportunity to enjoy drinks at the New Zealand High commission as well as a great community Fia Fia evening ,tasting local food and learning traditional dance”, says World ARC managing director, Andrew Bishop.

“The world’s friendliest rally thoroughly enjoyed the ease of arrival into Niue, so much so that Niue is now permanently on their annual route around the world”, says Keith Vial, Commodore of the Niue Yacht Club.

One captain who has been sailing for decades and has experienced many welcomes said Niue’s was the most genuine and heartfelt he had ever been a part of. Another captain mentioned that the Niue Yacht Club was a great “bridge” to immersing themselves in the Niuean culture with real people of Niue.

Niue, also called “The Rock”, is a large upraised coral atoll, which results in water clarity of up to 80 metres, creating perfect conditions for whale and dolphin viewing, or for diving and snorkeling.

Niue offers the best of both worlds for sea and land lovers with a 64km ring road leading to coves and chasms. The unique marine life, fishing, diving and more are just waiting for those of adventurous spirit to discover.

This standalone land mass Northeast of Tonga provides every yachtie with the perfect destination, says Niue Tourism’s Vanessa Marsh.

“We have 19 moorings in Alofi Bay’s crystal clear waters, perfect for small to heavier yachts. Our world-renowned Niue Yacht Club offers you a home away from cabin with a warm smile and a cold drink,” says Vanessa.

After some Niuean rest and relaxation, the World ARC fleet’s next stop was Tonga.
