Russia lays claim to North Pole, Greenpeace reacts

Moscow, 4 August, 2014 — Reacting to news that Russia has submitted a claim to the seabed around the North Pole [1], Greenpeace Russia Arctic campaigner Vladimir Chuprov said:

"The melting of the Arctic ice is uncovering a new and vulnerable sea, but countries like Russia and Norway want to turn it into the next Saudi Arabia. Unless we act together, this region could be dotted with oil wells and fishing fleets within our lifetimes.

We have a once in a generation chance to do things differently. Millions of people are asking for a protected sanctuary in the uninhabited area around the North Pole where nature is left wild. This would not affect the sovereign rights of the countries involved, but would be an act of cooperation from our leaders which would secure their legacy forever.

Today’s news feel ominous, but it need not be. The protection of the Arctic is a defining issue for our times and it can help bring countries together.”
