Dr. Ashrawi conducts separate meetings with representatives

Dr. Ashrawi conducts separate meetings with representatives from the IMF and World Vision

Today PLO Executive Committee Dr. Hanan Ashrawi met with a delegation of International Monetary Fund representatives at the PLO Headquarters in Ramallah. Dr. Ashrawi bid farewell to outgoing mission chief Christoph Duenwald and welcomed incoming mission chief Karen Ongley.

The discussion focused on the internal situation in Palestine, the prospects for reconciliation and the significance of lifting the illegal siege of Gaza and providing relief and reconstruction in Gaza. Dr. Ashrawi said, “Elections are one of the main requirements for reconciliation; if they do not happen, the entire political system and the ability to conduct good governance are at risk.”

In the meeting, Dr. Ashrawi reviewed political options for the future and stressed the importance of multilateral engagement, including the French initiative to organize an international peace conference, Palestinian efforts at the ICC, and the adoption of resolutions by the UN Security Council that end the military occupation and Israel’s violations of international law and Palestinian human rights.

She said, “Such an international conference would serve to end the American monopoly of the failed peace process which has been extremely detrimental and has emboldened Israel to evade accountability and to act with impunity. The international community needs to exhibit the political will necessary and adopt concrete steps based on international law, international humanitarian and signed agreements before Israel succeeds in superimposing “Great Israel” on historical Palestine.”

In addition, both parties assessed the dire economic situation in Palestine and agreed that institution and nation-building cannot succeed without serious and tangible measures to end the military occupation and to establish a free and sovereign Palestinian state on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

In a separate meeting, Dr. Ashrawi addressed a delegation from World Vision, which included David Verboom, the National Director in World Vision Jerusalem – West Bank – Gaza office, and provided them with a thorough analysis of the deterioration of the situation on the ground and Israel’s willful efforts to destroy the two-state solution and the chances for peace.

Dr. Ashrawi expressed her appreciation to World Vision for its efforts in carrying out projects for sustainable development in Palestine. She also acknowledged its role in presenting the Palestinian narrative abroad and in having an impact on the perceptions and attitudes in Christian churches globally.
